This project will look at various aspects of the early years of education, focussing on pre-school issues and on admissions policies when children start primary school. This is a new area for CEE research which will use large scale data sources to address key policy questions.

The focus will be upon shedding light on the impact of policy on early years education. The aim will be to provide evidence on the benefits that can accrue in the early years, and the project will evaluate both short and longer term benefits associated with early years environment, childcare and education to children. Part of this will involve study of the linkages between mothers' employment and the cost or availability of childcare. A focus will also be placed on the age at which children begin compulsory schooling at primary school.
